I hate what they did with Blossomforth's mane.

A long time ago, someone on deviantArt—I think their name was KawaiiDesuDesu—made a comic about Cupcake, the Earth pony HasbrOC whose box art is a Fluttershy recolor. Cupcake runs into Twilight Sparkle and says, "I think I'm lost, could you help me?" And Twilight says, "Sure, what's your name and where are you going?" And Cupcake says, "I'm Cupcake, and I'm looking for Sugarcube Corner." And in the background, Pinkie Pie starts muttering, "Cupcake? Cupcake? Cupcake?" Then she turns into Pinkamena and says, "This will be interesting."

Yes, it's a "Cupcakes" reference, and as much as I hate "Cupcakes" and how everypony keeps referencing it and forcing it back into our collective conscience, I have to admit I enjoy some of the more clever references: the not-so-explicit ones that could be taken another way.

I continued the story with a comic of my own. Now Cupcake is running for her life, with Pinkamena chasing after her yelling, "Come back! I just wanted to know if you taste like cupcakes!" And Cupcake is screaming out for Blossomforth. Blossomforth, who is up relaxing on a cloud, looks down to see Cupcake in peril. Then she dives down to save Cupcake, creating a Sonic Rainbloom in the process (much like how Rainbow Dash performed her Sonic Rainboom while saving Rarity). Pinkamena is left standing in a field of flowers where there was once only grass.

See, when Rainbow Dash gets going so fast that she breaks the sound barrier, she creates a sonic boom and a rainbow at the same time, and it's called a Sonic Rainboom. But when Blossomforth gets going that fast, she creates a sonic boom and causes a whole field of flowers to blossom forth, hence her name. And that's called a Sonic Rainbloom.

Blossomforth always struck me as a cross between Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, something like a femme version of Rainbow Dash: maybe a little bit adventurous, but a lot less brash and more delicate and demure.

If you look at Blossomforth's box art, she's a Rainbow Dash recolor. So Blossomforth should have a mane that looks kinda like Rainbow Dash's. But on the show, for whatever reason, they gave her Twilight Sparkle's mane. I've seen comments that say things like, "oh, how creative they were with Blossomforth's mane," and I think, are you crazy!? That is clearly Twilight Sparkle's mane. That's not creative at all! That's a total recolor, and a recolor of the wrong mane at that!

Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie (and, to a lesser extent, Rarity) have very distinctive manes. They really stand out. Applejack and Rainbow Dash, as the more tomboyish members of the mane six, have more generic manes that are more amenable to recoloring. I see all the recolor ponies in the blind bag sets (I have all five waves), and the Rainbow Dash recolors look good to me, the Applejack recolors look good to me, the Rarity recolors look okay, but the Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie recolors just look wrong. Twilight's mane only looks good on Twilight. It certainly does not look good on Blossomforth at all. "I really hate her mane!"

It pains me every time I see Blossomforth show up on deviantArt or Equestria Daily with that mane. It makes me want to yell at all the deviantArtists out there, "Stop drawing mai waifu with that mane!"

Yes, Blossomforth is mai waifu. Blossomforth was mai waifu long before she ever appeared in the show. Blossomforth was mai waifu back when she was nothing more than a HasbrOC, a recolor pony that everypony else stuck up their noses at, saying things like, "Hasbro should be giving us show-accurate toys of the mane six, but no, they keep giving us crap like Blossomforth and Dewdrop Dazzle." But I looked at her and fell in love at first sight. "I really like her name!"

I am the owner of a deviantArt group called FriendshipIsRecolors. I accept just about any submission about a HasbrOC, including Blossomforth, regardless of quality or interpretation. And since I stick to my principles, I have to accept any drawing of Blossomforth with that mane into the group; I can't just reject them out of spite, though there are some days where I'd really, really like to.

Now I already see some bronies, perhaps high-ranking contributors to The Wiki That Must Not Be Named, ready to start calling me a hypocrite. After all, during the whole Lyra Heartstrings debacle, wasn't I one of the ones making the argument that the show is canon and the merchandise is not? And now here I go on a rant about Blossomforth's mane, apparently making the opposite argument. Except I have a way to weasel out of this trap I've set for myself.

It should be what comes first that's canon. Lyra appeared in the show long before a blind bag version of her showed up. So Lyra is Lyra, not "Heartstrings." (Of course, this is in the context of the original argument; now that the name Lyra Heartstrings is in both canon and fanon, the issue is settled anyway.) Blossomforth showed up in the merchandise long before she ever appeared on the show. So the Blossomforth merchandise should be canon. But this still gives me pause, because the show is always canon. No exceptions.

So I made another comic, to fix everything. Blossomforth's friend, Dewdrop Dazzle, is a huge Twilight Sparkle fangirl, going so far as to style her mane and tail just like Twilight. (This has fandom precedent: there is a fanfic called "Twilight's Best Friend" in which Dewdrop Dazzle attempts to take over Twilight's life. I pay homage to that.) In the comic, Dewdrop Dazzle is styling Blossomforth's mane. Of course, since she's a Twilight fangirl, she's styling it just like Twilight's. And Blossomforth says, "I am never letting you style my mane again."

I hate what they did with Blossomforth's mane.

I spent four hours last night writing up a rant over something rather silly: how much I hate what they did with Blossomforth's mane.

I always liked your explanation. I had a Blossomforth before that episode aired, and I liked the box art mane better.

My personal opinion is that these kinda things aren't mutually exclusive. When they said "Heartstrings", I shrugged and used it as a last name, got flamed for still using Lyra, then waited for the emotion to fade a little. I mean, I know someone who has worn her hair three different ways in five days. Why couldn't manes work the same way?

Good point. I can totally see Blossomforth trying different kinds of mane styles.
